More Chistmas songs from Italy

Christmas in Italy, or "Natale," is a time filled with family gatherings, religious celebrations, and rich culinary traditions. The festive season kicks off on December 8th with the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, when families put up their Christmas trees and "presepi" (nativity scenes), which are central to Italian Christmas decor. Presepi are often elaborate and can be found in homes, churches, and public squares. Christmas markets, known as "Mercatini di Natale," are also a significant part of the holiday season, with stalls selling handcrafted goods, ornaments, and delicious foods like "panettone" and "torrone."

On Christmas Eve ("La Vigilia"), families gather for a special meal that often follows the "Feast of the Seven Fishes," a meal consisting of several seafood dishes, particularly in southern Italy. After dinner, many attend midnight mass ("La Messa di Mezzanotte"), where churches are beautifully decorated, and the nativity scene is completed with the figure of baby Jesus. Christmas Day is typically a quieter affair spent with family, enjoying a meal that might include pasta, roasted meats, and traditional sweets like "panettone" or "pandoro." The festive season continues until Epiphany on January 6th, when "La Befana," a kindly old witch, brings gifts to children.

Italian Christmas music plays a central role in the celebrations, blending traditional hymns with folk songs that have been passed down through generations. Carols are sung both in churches and homes, and many regions have their unique versions of Christmas songs.

Tu scendi dalle stelle

Andrea Bocelli(You Come Down from the Stars): This is one of the most famous and beloved Italian Christmas carols. Written in the 18th century by Saint Alphonsus Liguori, it speaks about the birth of Jesus and his humble arrival on Earth. It’s often sung during midnight mass and at family gatherings.  -

Astro del ciel

Zucchero - The Italian version of "Silent Night" is a direct translation of the original German hymn, but it’s sung with an Italian flair. The soft melody and serene lyrics about the birth of Christ make it a staple in Italian Christmas celebrations.

Caro Gesù Bambino

Andrea Bocelli - This sweet song is often sung by children in Italy during the Christmas season. It’s a simple but heartfelt carol in which children ask the baby Jesus for blessings and reflect on the meaning of Christmas.

Bianco Natale

Irene Grandi - The Italian version of Irving Berlin’s classic "White Christmas" is a popular tune during the holiday season. It brings the nostalgic longing for a snowy Christmas, much like in the original, but with a distinctly Italian warmth.
