Christmas in Spain, or "Navidad," is a festive and deeply religious time, marked by a range of unique customs that vary across regions. The Christmas season in Spain typically begins with the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8th and stretches all the way to January 6th, the day of "El Día de los Reyes" (Epiphany or Three Kings’ Day), which is when most Spanish children receive their presents. Christmas Eve, known as "Nochebuena," is the most important family gathering, with a grand dinner that often includes dishes like roast lamb, seafood, and "turrón," a traditional nougat made with almonds.

In addition to the family feast, attending the "Misa del Gallo" (Midnight Mass) is a widespread custom on Christmas Eve. Spanish cities, towns, and villages are decorated with vibrant lights, and nativity scenes (or "Belénes") are commonly displayed in homes and public squares. One of the most popular celebrations during the season is "El Gordo," the Spanish Christmas lottery, which is the world’s largest lottery by total prize money and is drawn on December 22nd.

Music plays an integral part in the Spanish Christmas experience, with traditional songs known as "villancicos" being sung throughout the holiday season. These folk carols, often accompanied by tambourines and small drums, add a joyful and sometimes spiritual element to the festivities, with many songs celebrating the nativity and the joy of the season.

Los Peces en el Río

This is one of the most famous Spanish villancicos, focusing on the Virgin Mary and the river fish that swim joyfully as Jesus is born. The song has a catchy melody and is sung in homes, schools, and churches throughout Spain.

Campana Sobre Campana

A classic Spanish Christmas carol, this song is about the bells ringing in Bethlehem to announce the birth of Jesus. Its joyful, rhythmic lyrics and simple melody make it a favorite among children and adults alike.

Noche de Paz

The Spanish version of "Silent Night" retains the same serene and solemn melody as the original, but the lyrics reflect the Spanish Catholic traditions. It is often sung during midnight mass and other religious ceremonies during Christmas.

Fum, Fum, Fum

Originating from Catalonia, this energetic villancico has a lively tune and distinctive rhythm. The word "fum" is onomatopoeic, mimicking the sound of a drum, and the song tells of the birth of Jesus and the joy it brings.
